I’ve seen all the ones listed on most of the books I’ve bought, especially tour de force. That one gets very overused!

Poignant and page-turner :D

I don’t think I’ve ever used “poignant”, “page-turner”, or “tour de force” in any of my book reviews. I’m guilty of using “that said” frequently, and not just in book or movie reviews, either. In fact, I probably use it more when commenting on message boards than I do when writing a piece for someone. 

Oh, and I’m completely sticking up for “nuanced” if it’s used correctly and sparingly. It’s a pretty word and it rolls off the tongue. 

Well hey, looks like I’m off to a decent start over here…

A wise professor once told me to “unpack” cliches to get to real meat of what you are trying to express. The extra effort results in precise, clear writing that actually says something.
